UPDATE: Grand Texas Theme Park
EAST TX - New details have been released regarding the Grand Texas Theme Park project we reported on last July. In a presentation to the East Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, the theme park’s development group outlined features and expectations for the project’s planning and construction phases and beyond. The launch of the Grand Texas website at www.grandtx.com was also announced at the meeting.
Water park, baseball stadium and more
The 630-acre park located at the intersection of FM 242 and U.S. Highway 59 in New Caney will feature themed areas based on various elements of Texas history and culture. Also included in the plan are 450,000 square feet of retail and dining space, a 6,000-seat baseball stadium designed for minor league play, several lodging choices, and an RV park.
Big Rivers Water Park, a 40-acre site with water slides and a natural river running through it, is another main feature of the development. A wakeboard lake, equestrian trails, zip lines, and an outdoor amphitheater are also in the plans.
Economic impacts include 1,600 construction jobs
The economic impacts of Grand Texas are projected to be substantial. The park is expected to attract more than 4.5 million visitors within five years of opening, creating 1,200 full-time. An estimated 1,600 construction jobs will also be created.
Site preparation will begin in January, with Brae Burn Construction as the general contractor. The park will open in phases, beginning with the water park and two hotels in April of 2015. The theme park will follow in summer, and the event center is scheduled to open in October 2015. The final phase, the baseball stadium, is expected to open in time for the 2016 season.
