Walmart Announces Neighborhood Market Store for San Antonio
Walmart’s first Neighborhood Market store in San Antonio is slated to open in spring of 2014, the Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer announced earlier this month.
Located at Hunt Lane and Military Drive West on the far west side, the new store will span roughly 41,000 square feet and carry more than 26,000 items. The first San Antonio store will join 42 other Neighborhood Markets already operating in Texas. Each store employs about 95 associates.
Walmart Neighborhood Market is a smaller footprint alternative to the company’s superstores for customers who want a quick, closer-to-home shopping experience. There are now about 200 Neighborhood Markets in the U.S offering fresh produce, meat and dairy products, bakery and deli items, household supplies, and health and beauty aids, as well as pharmacy services.
Energy efficient technology and environmentally features are hallmarks of Neighborhood Market construction. LED lighting in exterior signage and refrigeration cases, an energy management system, and efficient HVAC units help to reduce energy and water consumption and minimize waste.
According to a Walmart spokesperson, planning for the San Antonio store is in the early stages, with construction to begin later this year. Future San Antonio locations are also being considered, although nothing definite is planned at this time.
